Why study physics?

In order to understand how nature works in all its forms, be it the infinitely large, the infinitely small, or the infinitely complex. It is a fundamental science that deals with the properties of matter that govern natural phenomena.

Physicists don't study just stars and quarks, but also work in other areas, from medicine to semiconductors, economics and video games. In short, physics leads to everything!

Studying physics is much more than memorizing the mathematical rules underlying the laws of physics. It means developing a mindset suited to the scientific approach.

When you study physics you learn to solve problems with a qualitative and quantitative approach, applying the mathematical, computer and experimental skills that you will develop throughout your time at university. These qualities are just what employers in many fields are looking for, and will guarantee you a fascinating, stimulating and well-paid career!

Medical physics

Physicists are crucial partners in the development of medical sciences. They are responsible for a number of major advances in the field, from the discovery of X-rays to the development of the latest scanners. Medical physics is a domain of knowledge where scientific research often brings a direct contribution to the health of our society.

In association with researchers at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), UdeM's Department of Physics offers a MSc program in medical physics. With theoretical courses and a master's thesis, this program focuses on 2 main themes: medical imaging and radiotherapy. With scholarships reserved for this field and numerous job opportunities in the health care system, medical physics is the career to choose.
