Exploring possible universes of correlated topological insulators - Greg Fiete (University of Texas at Austin)

Greg Fiete, Departement of Physics,  University of Texas at Austin

abstract:

Over the past decade physics has experienced an infusion of ideas from a branch of mathematics known as topology.  Topology deals with properties of objects that are invariant with respect to continuous shape or size changes.  When quantum systems possess topological aspects, they can exhibit an unusual robustness to systems imperfections and environmental perturbations. In this talk, I will survey recent advances in our understanding of topological quantum many-particle systems and highlight what makes them unusual, as well as how they can be experimentally detected and probed.  The talk will conclude with a status report on the frontier of our knowledge, and what possible applications might arise from topological phases of matter.
