Biography
Luc Vinet is Aisenstadt Professor of Physics at the Université de Montréal and was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of IVADO in August 2021. Born in Montréal, he holds a doctorate from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) and a Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal, both in theoretical physics. After two years as a Research Associate at MIT, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at the Université de Montréal in the early 1980s and promoted to full professorship in 1992. His research interests in theoretical and mathematical physics include: exactly solvable problems, symmetries, algebraic structures, special functions and quantum information.
In 1999, Luc Vinet joined McGill University where he held the position of Vice-Principal (Academic) and Provost. From 2005 to 2010, he was the Rector of the Université de Montréal. He was also the Director of the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) of the Université de Montréal, from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2013 to 2021. In addition to being a founding director of MITACS, a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence, he was instrumental in the creation of many other leading research institutes in Québec and Canada. Professor Vinet has received numerous honours and distinctions. In particular, he was awarded the Armand-Frappier Prize of the Government of Québec in 2009 and the 2012 CAP-CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics; he holds an honorary doctorate from the Université Claude-Bernard (Lyon); in 2017, he was made Officer of the Ordre national du Québec; he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2018 and he is a Fellow of both the American and Canadian Mathematical Societies; in 2021 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.

Research recruitment
Luc Vinet, professor at the Department of Physics of Université de Montréal, CEO of IVADO and member of the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM), has openings in his research team.
Numerous graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and undergraduate interns are part of his group within the CRM. The research topics cover a fairly broad spectrum in mathematical physics bearing on symmetries, integrable and exactly solvable systems, quantum information, representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, orthogonal polynomials and special functions.
Postdoctoral fellowship positions are currently available. The salary is competitive.
Required profile
- For the candidate to be eligible, tenure of the fellowship must take place within 5 years of obtaining a PhD in Physics or Mathematics.
- The candidate must have research experience in the areas of the team;
Flexibility will be applied for candidates justifying career breaks and special circumstances. Applicants are invited to mention that in their application (examples: maternity, illness, etc.).
We also encourage applications from people who obtained their PhD outside of Quebec.
Our commitment for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
In order that the advancement of knowledge and opportunities in the field of natural sciences and engineering equitably benefits all members of society, we promote the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion as offered at IVADO and the CRM. We are committed to providing an inclusive, non-discriminatory, open and transparent recruitment process and research environment.
Your application
Please submit your application by email to josee.savard@ivado.ca, including:
- A cover letter;
- Your c.v. including your publications
- Your official PhD transcripts;
- Three (3) letters of recommendation. They can be sent directly by email to josee.savard@ivado.ca.
Deadline : December 15th, 2021
Please note that applications received after this date will be considered only if positions are still vacant.

My research focuses on finding precise solutions to physics models. I work on designing systems for the perfect transfer of quantum information. I study the (random) quantum walks used in the development of quantum calculation algorithms. I examine the asymmetrical exclusion processes that apply in a large number of fields like biopolymerization and traffic-flow problems. My research also deals with stochastic processes used in genetic modelling. A large proportion of my work is devoted to integrable or superintegrable systems, so called because they have many conservation laws. They are important in theoretical terms and have many applications. The methodology underlying my research is based in part on the study of symmetries. I am also working to develop their mathematical description in terms of algebraic structures and orthogonal polynomials and special functions.
